Fitness Trainer Education

I've heard it said that you should try to make your living doing something you love. It just makes everything easier if you enjoy all the hours at work. If you are a fitness nut and enjoy the difference that being fit has had on your life, then there is a way to turn your passion into your life's work.

In the last few years with the growth in Health clubs, diet centers, resorts, even hospital based fitness facilities there is a large and growing need for people with fitness trainer education. There is also the option to work for yourself, as I do, in my own fitness studio in my home. When I first started out and didn't yet have a home studio, I travelled to clients homes to help them reach their goals. The point is that I don't have a university degree and yet I was able to get the fitness trainer education I needed to first become a YMCA Fitness Instructor and then an ISSA certified personal trainer with my own, stay-at-home business.

Whether you want to work for yourself or for a club, there is a great demand for professionals with top-notch fitness trainer education.

Incidentally, I've recently put together a listing of Fitness Trainer Schools as a source of information for anyone wanting a top notch fitness trainer education.

The reason for the demand for fitness trainers, of course, is that North Americans today are in worse shape than at any other time in recent history. Coincidently, they also have more disposable income that at any other time in recent history as well and are willing to pay for expert help.

According to medical authorities, more than half of our population is overweight.Children have never been as obese as they are today. In a recent USA Today article, Dr. Hugh D. Allen of Columbia Children’s Hospital stated that 30 million of the 80 million kids alive today will die of heart disease as adults, unless current trends change. Older adults are weak and frail. Doctors and HMOs are realizing that fitness training is the future of health care. The client base for fitness trainers with recognized fitness trainer education is huge and growing.

From kids to older adults, physically challenged to Olympic athletes, virtually everyone can benefit from an active lifestyle that includes weight training, aerobic conditioning, flexibility, sensible nutrition and a positive mental outlook. These are the 5 key elements that fitness professionals use every day to help change lives. Medical research and countless scientific studies have proven that these are also the most important factors to help prevent or reverse many disease processes.

I was a little worried, before I enrolled, that I wouldn't know how to evaluate a client and design an effective program that would get results. I've received emails from others considering a career as a personal trainer who have the same concerns. It was a relief to learn that a good fitness trainer education course will teach you how to apply the 5 key elements to each clients' individual situation and goals. Most courses also contain a section on starting and building your own business.

I was also worried that a business as a personal trainer couldn't succeed in the small town where I live, but with a little bit of marketing and mostly by word-of-mouth, I have been able to work all the hours I want to.

There has never been a better time to pursue a career in the fitness industry.

It is nice to know that I can make a difference in the lives of others.

I should warn you though, that getting your fitness trainer education from a reputable source will involve a commitment on your part and good deal of hard work and study. Be prepared to spend alot of time and energy on working through the course materials and doing your assignments. I took my ISSA course through correspondence, which for me, was perfect because I could work at my own pace. I would read when I could and would set aside blocks of time, on my schedule, to do the assignments.

A very constructive part of the course was the section that set out hypothetical scenarios with potential clients. Given a set of physical conditions and limitations of a client, along with the goals they wish to accomplish, I had to design a program that would be effective for that individual. There were many of these and they were all marked by professional fitness trainer education instructors with far more education than me. Sounds scary but the course materials were so good I had no trouble getting good marks.

No other profession addresses the 5 key elements the way fitness professionals do. The U.S. Department of Labor indicated that personal fitness trainers and aerobics instructors held about 100,000 jobs in 2000 and that number is expected to grow 52.1% by 2010, a rate much faster than average. So whether you're interested in personally losing weight, gaining muscle, improving your own health or if you're interested in helping others as a fitness professional, we're unconditionally committed to help you succeed.

There are certainly more options with a fitness trainer education than strength training and weight loss. You can also get specialized certified fitness trainer education in yoga, sport yoga, sports training (think golf, hockey, baseball), injury rehabilitation, running, flexibility and many others. So if you love a particular sport and have a passion about fitness, then you could consider one of the fitness specialties.

Here are a few stats to consider:

• The 1992 National Survey of Worksite Health Promotion Activities found that 81 percent of worksites offered at least one health promotion activity.

• Approximately 250,000 people will die this year due to the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

• "We have found that 60 percent -- well over half of Americans -- are not regularly active." -Donna Shalala, US Secretary of Health and Human Services (1993-2001)

THE JOB
On Becoming a Personal Trainer

  • Personal trainers guide and motivate clients to reach their peak fitness potential.
  • They assess clients' fitness needs of clients and develop plans based on them.
  • Personal trainers provide personal training, present classes and instruct on proper nutrition.
SKILLS

  • Personal trainers must have a strong understanding of the functions and vital processes of the human body so they can effectively design and deliver personal nutrition and physical fitness training programs.
  • It is critical to be knowledgeable in health promotion at every stage of growth and development to meet the needs of various clients.
  • A good personal trainer must be energetic and motivating, always encouraging their clients to reach maximum performance.

EDUCATION

  • Personal trainers can go through a certification program through various organizations, including the Internation Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American College of Sports Medicine.
  • Having your bachelor's degrees in a fitness-related field, such as exercise science, exercise physiology, sports medicine, physical education, biomechanics or kinesiology is a good thing, but isn't necessary to be an effective trainer.

I got my fitness trainer education and certification through a correspondence course with the International Sports Science Association (ISSA). These days, most online education systems incorporate Dell educational technology that optimizes the online learning process for students and faculty. You might also wish to take your course online using one of these Fitness Trainer Schools.
